POKOTABI / Hashigo Cafe Kyoto
Hashigo Cafe Kyoto
Set within a renovated former sento in Kyoto’s Uzumasa neighborhood, Hashigo Cafe Kyoto serves whimsical, foam-topped shaved ice alongside hearty hamburg steak lunch sets and golden french toast.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Housed in a converted sento that once served the local neighborhood, Hashigo Cafe Kyoto preserves original bathhouse touches as distinctive design accents, from stepped sunken baths and tiled walls to the old reception counter. Natural light washes through overhead skylights into the spacious interior, where guests can choose between comfortable sofa arrangements, raised tatami seating, or snug table settings tucked directly down into the former tiled soaking tubs.
The cafe's signature sweet is the Hashigori, a style of kakigori combining finely shaved ice with rich layers of culinary espuma. Combinations highlight thoughtful texture and flavor contrasts, such as the honey-lemonade cream cheese with tangy lemon syrup, and a fragrant matcha milk topped with matcha foam, sweet azuki beans, and chewy shiratama rice dumplings. Playful touches keep the desserts engaging from first spoonful to last, including a royal milk tea variation concealing cheesecake within the ice, or a tiny marshmallow perched atop the crown.
At lunchtime, the menu centers on the Hashigo Special Hamburg Plate, anchored by a plump, juicy beef patty. Diners can select a rich, classic demi-glace sauce, a sweet sauteed-onion Japanese-style sauce, or melted cheese, with the option to pair the meat with sides such as fried prawns or chicken nanban. Each plate is rounded out with assorted side dishes and miso soup, making for a substantial midday meal.
For an afternoon break or a lighter bite, the kitchen prepares french toast griddled crisp on the outside and tender within. Offerings range from simple servings paired with syrup, whipped cream, and ice cream to richer seasonal variations such as a chestnut mont blanc topping. The drink list doubles as an extension of the dessert menu, featuring caramel cream lattes and honey cream milk teas crowned with fluffy whipped cream, offering a restful pause while exploring the historic streets of Uzumasa.
